FAQ (Frequently asked Questions)

Which resins/epoxies can I use with these molds?

We are big fans of Alumilite Clear Slow, but any epoxy or resin will work. Keep in mind that some have a low viscosity and may take days to fully cure before demold.  Always make sure the resin you are using is suited to the type of casting you're doing.  Some resins cannot be used for deep casting in a single pour and will not perform well when used outside their use specifications.   Typical failures we have seen are chipping and cracking during demold. This is not a mold issue but a resin one.

Why choose a hard body mold over silicone?

If you're casting frequently, engaged in production or are focused on creating high-quality blanks, Lizard Blanks’ hard body molds offer the kind of reliability and finesse that aligns with your iterative, detail-driven process.

More details here.

What is the best way to demold a square / rectangular mold?

Allow your casting to fully cure. Once cured, remove only the end cap with the wing nuts.  Put the cap back on loosely then turn the mold over the mold and rap it on a hard surface several times. The casting should dislodge enough to be easily removed.  How-To Video:  https://youtu.be/H4nlZVs3Vek

Do I need to use a mold release agent?

Mold release is not required on our standard premium-plastic molds. You can use it to make release even easier and it will not affect the mold.  However, you will need to apply a liberal amount of release agent (such as Stoner Urethane Mold Release) for any Clear PVC type molds.

What are your molds made of?

We only use the highest grade of plastics available.  These mold are designed to stand up to rigors of production type environments.

What happens if I have an issue with a mold?

Check to make sure that you have adequately tightened all of the wing nuts on your mold before casting...especially with a new mold being used for the first time, or if the mold has been stored/unused for a while. You should also clean your mold after each use to remove any resin from the removable cap to prevent leaks.   Feel free to send an email to sales@lizardblanks.com if you have any questions or concerns about your mold.

Where can I buy these molds locally?

Check our Stockists Page for a list of retailers carrying Lizard Blanks products, including storefronts and online sales in other countries.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we have shipped to over 40 countries. Send an email to sales@lizardblanks.com to place an international order.  Or check or Stockists tab at the top of the page to find local vendors who carry our products.

How much resin should I mix up for each mold?

The easiest way to figure out how much resin you will need is to use this simple calculator: Multiply inner Height x Weight x Length x 0.55. This will give you the required amount of epoxy resin in oz.

Oops....I got resin on the threads.

Things happen, we get it.

Depending on your resin, you can soak the "frozen" stud and wing nut in Acetone for 24 hours to soften the resin, this should  allow you to separate the stud from the wingnut. Once apart, clean the threads well, then use two wing nuts back to back to create a jam nut and screw the stud back in.  Many customers report this works well for them.  If that does not work for you, Send an email to sales@lizardblanks.com and we will try to assist.

We also offer a replacement hardware / repair kit on the website.  There is usually no additional charge for shipping if you order it with another product.

Are the gaskets in Gen 3 molds reusable?

Yes, the gaskets are designed to be used over and over.  At this point no one has worn a gasket out so we don't know how long they'll last...but it will likely depend on frequency of use and care.  Normally gaskets won't need to be removed between uses, but if there is any resin build up, be sure to remove the gasket from the body and clean away the excess.  Pay attention to the orientation of the gasket (shiny or dull side up) so you can reapply it the same way.

If you damage or lose a gasket, replacements are available.  (Send us an email if you don't see your size on the website.)

How do I place a custom order?

Custom Order

We can custom-build any size hard-body mold to your specifications. Custom orders have a 2 week lead time from reciept of payment. Please check your pressure pot inside diameter to make sure the mold requested will work for your pot size, unless you're planning to use open casting.

Email Phil.Hahn@lizardblanks.com to get a quote.   Please include the Height, Width, and Length of the blank you want to cast (the mold's inner dimensions) so we may properly quote you.

After you accept the quote we will invoice you either through Pay Pal or by direct invoice, your choice.  Your order will be placed in the build que upon receipt of payment.

What is the timeframe for a custom order?

Please allow up to 2 weeks for any custom molds before they ship.

How do I choose a mold size?

We offer a quick-comparison chart that lists each mold by the size blank it produces, to help you easily choose.  Visit the Mold Size Chart page for more information.

Do the listed mold sizes represent inner dimensions or outer dimenstions?

Mold size indicates inner dimensions, or the size blank the mold produces.  Outer dimensions are also listed for each mold so you can see the overall size of the mold body.  For larger molds (6+ inches in length or width) we also provide the diagonal measurement to help you determine if the mold is likely to fit your pressure pot.  Inner dimension, outer dimension, and (when applicable) diagonal dimension is listed in the description on each product page.  Learn more about how dimensions are determined on our ID vs OD page.

Can a pressure pot be used horizontally to increase length?

Yes!  Learn more about that on our ID vs OD page.
