HARD BODY RESIN CASTING MOLDS:
Precision Casting Tools for Resin and Hybrid Blank Makers

A resin casting mold is more than a container that holds resin while it cures. It is the foundation of your casting process.

The mold determines the dimensions of your blank, influences how easily the finished casting can be removed, and plays an important role in producing consistent results from one project to the next.

At Lizard Blanks, we design and manufacture hard-body resin casting molds for makers who want a reliable, repeatable casting process.

Whether you are creating pen blanks, knife scales, handles, pepper mills, calls, wedding bouquet keepsakes, or custom hybrid projects, our goal is to provide a mold that functions as a dependable shop tool—not a disposable accessory.

What Is a Hard Body Resin Mold?

A hard-body resin mold is a rigid casting mold designed to maintain its shape throughout the casting process.

Unlike flexible silicone molds, hard-body molds provide a fixed cavity that helps maintain consistent dimensions during casting, curing, and demolding.

This makes them especially useful for projects where the finished blank will later be turned, machined, or shaped.

For woodturners and resin artists producing hybrid blanks, consistency matters. A well-designed mold provides a predictable starting point for the work that follows.

Why Choose a Hard Body Mold?

The right mold depends on the project.

Silicone molds are an excellent choice for many applications. Their flexibility, low cost, and ability to reproduce complex shapes make them valuable tools for many resin artists.

However, for makers who cast regularly, a hard-body mold offers advantages that become increasingly important over time.

Repeatable Dimensions

When creating blanks for turning or machining, consistency matters.

A rigid mold helps maintain the intended cavity size and shape, allowing you to produce blanks with predictable dimensions from casting to casting.

That means less adjustment during machining and a more efficient workflow.

Designed for Repeated Use

A casting mold becomes part of your process.

If you are making one experimental casting, almost any functional mold may work.

But if you are producing dozens or hundreds of blanks, durability and repeatability become important.

Lizard Blanks molds are designed to be used repeatedly, with construction methods intended to withstand regular assembly, casting, and demolding.

Faster, Easier Demolding

A good mold should make the casting process easier—not add frustration.

Many Lizard Blanks molds use a tool-free wing-nut assembly system that allows the mold to be opened quickly after curing.

This reduces the need for tools during demolding and helps protect both the mold and the finished blank.

Small workflow improvements become significant when you are casting frequently.

Precision Machined Construction

The difference between a basic casting mold and a dependable casting tool is found in the details.

Lizard Blanks molds are designed and manufactured with precision machining methods to create consistent, repeatable components.

Depending on the mold design, features may include:

  • Precision-machined components

  • Purpose-selected engineering plastics

  • Dovetail construction

  • Tool-free assembly

  • Replaceable hardware

  • Additional overflow capacity

  • Designs suitable for pressure-pot casting applications

Every feature has a purpose: making the casting process more predictable and efficient.

Selecting the Right Material for the Application

At Lizard Blanks, we do not believe one material is automatically the right choice for every mold design.

Our molds are built from engineering-grade plastics selected for their performance in resin casting applications.

The majority of our molds are manufactured from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene).

HDPE provides an excellent balance of:

  • Machinability

  • Durability

  • Dimensional stability

  • Smooth casting surfaces

  • Easy demolding without the need for mold-release products

  • Resistance to moisture absorption

  • Thermal resistance for typical resin casting and curing conditions

  • Long-term value

For certain mold designs, UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is used when its specific properties provide an advantage or when a required material thickness is better suited to that material.

UHMW is known for its excellent wear resistance and low-friction characteristics.

Rather than choosing a material based only on marketing appeal, we select the material that best fits the intended application.

The result is a practical, durable casting tool designed for real-world use.

Hard Body Molds and Pressure Pot Casting

Many resin casters use pressure pots to reduce bubbles and improve the appearance of finished castings.

When using a pressure pot, the mold becomes an important part of the casting system.

A properly designed mold helps maintain the desired blank dimensions while containing resin during the curing process.

Lizard Blanks molds are designed with resin casting workflows in mind.

Always follow the operating guidelines and safety requirements for your specific pressure pot and casting materials.

Hard Body Resin Molds vs. Silicone Molds

Both hard-body and silicone molds have their place.   The best choice depends on how you work.

For occasional projects and complex shapes, silicone may be the ideal solution.

For makers producing repeatable blanks for turning, machining, or regular production, a hard-body mold provides the consistency and durability many workflows require.

Resin Casting Molds for Woodturners and Makers

Many Lizard Blanks customers use our molds to create hybrid blanks by combining resin with natural materials such as wood or pinecone, stabilizing materials, pigments, and other creative elements.

Plate molds – vs. individual-cavity molds -- allow larger portions of hybrid material to be incorporated into a larger plate, which is then cut into smaller blanks.

Common mold applications include:

The finished project may be unique, but the process behind it benefits from consistency.

A dependable mold gives makers a better foundation for creativity.

Custom Resin Casting Molds

Not every project fits a standard size.  That is why Lizard Blanks also works with customers who need custom mold solutions.

Custom molds can be designed for:

  • Unique blank dimensions

  • Specialty projects

  • Different cavity configurations

  • Larger or smaller formats

  • Specific production needs

If you have a project that requires a mold outside our standard offerings, contact Lizard Blanks to discuss your requirements.

Why Invest in a Precision Casting Mold?

The cost of a casting project includes more than the mold.

Consider:

  • Resin

  • Wood and other materials

  • Pigments

  • Pressure-pot time

  • Finishing time

  • Failed castings

A mold that produces consistent results and lasts through repeated use becomes an investment in your entire process.

The purpose of a Lizard Blanks mold is not simply to contain resin.  It is to help you create better blanks with a more reliable workflow.
